We know the adolescent stage for being a period in which one enters a crisis. Already from puberty, hormonal changes start the journey towards a new instance from every point of view.
Crises represent a turning point, they are stages of rupture, where something of the continuity that in one way or another passed until that moment, suddenly finds transformations that require new acknowledgments and adaptation.
But the adolescent stage, in addition to putting in crisis, and questioning what has been given so far, implies a period in which independence begins to take shape.
Becoming psychologically independent from parents is not a simple matter. First of all, because the parents themselves find it difficult to accept that the child is no longer a child.
And, secondly, becausethe adolescent is forging his own personality: with his own emotions, experiences and ideas; and that, being different, are separated from theirs.
The fathers and mothers who conceive of their sons and daughters as extensions of themselves, will experience this opening as a great threat. And many teen jobs get stuck for this reason.
Adolescent work involves historicization, the journey through family and personal history, in order to be able to build one's own project for the future.
Laindependence implies psychologically separating from parents, distinguishing which ideas, beliefs and projects are one's own and which are others'. Many times without therapeutic work, this task is very complex, because children introject their parents' voice from a very early age.
Therefore, it is necessary to metabolize everything received in upbringing, in order to be able to choose a personal path with a greater or lesser degree of freedom. The adolescent lowers his parents from the pedestal on which they were located, goes out into the world, meets peers and relativizes what he knows and what he has experienced so far.
Rebellion is a way of rivaling that authority and knowing “other ways of being, doing and thinking” that will confront you with other possible realities. This exploration is very important in adolescent work. Going out into the world puts history itself into perspective. Parents must support, be present, accept the exploration and at the same time care and contain.
In the cases where this exit to the world, this challenge and this separation does not occur, we could think that this work of adolescence has been stopped, not started or suspended, bringing with it its difficulties.
Constitute oneself as an independent being is a necessary and he althy journey that finds its maximum point of intensity and expression in the adolescent period, as chaotic as it is essential in subjective experience. It is a period of ddiscovery, exploration, rivalry andmeeting, of destruction and construction, which, if it happens he althy, enables and calls to the future.
Adolescent work is a creative work par excellence. It is the work of deconstruction and creation of new guidelines; it is the journey that enables the choice, the potentiality and the project dimension of an individual.
