Today, in The Guide 2000, we continue with the theme of the phrases. Knowing how to distinguish the phrases that make up a sentence is a very important issue for the analysis of syntactic functions to be successful. For this reason, we suggest you carry out the following exercises. Remember that you have to solve the exercises without looking at the solutions and, later, consult them to correct any possible mistakes you may have made. Go for them!

a) The school bulletin board is in that hallway over there.

b) My favorite carnival ride is the Ferris wheel.

c) I really like the color of this outfit.

– The school bulletin board: noun phrase.

The: determiner.

Board: core.

– Of school announcements: prepositional phrase headed by the preposition of + the noun phrase announcements of the school, where announcements is the nucleus and of the school another prepositional phrase formed by the preposition of + the and the phrasenominal college (core).

– It's in that hallway over there: verb phrase.

Is: core.

– In that corridor over there: prepositional phrase headed by the preposition in + the noun phrase that corridor over there composed of the determiner that + the core corridor + a prepositional phrase formed by the preposition of + the adverbial phrase there (core).

b) My favorite carnival ride is the Ferris wheel

– My favorite carnival ride: noun phrase.

Mi: determiner.

Attraction: core.

– From fair: prepositional phrase composed of the preposition of + the noun phrase fair (nucleus).

– Preferred: adjectival phrase (head).

– A lot: adverbial phrase (head).
