Hokusai's Fisherman's Wife's Dream

This image is an engraving made in wood by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in the year 1814, and which is currently one of the original engravings passed to support of paper is kept in the British Library in London.

Hokusai is one of the Japanese artists best known and valued in the West. Although, traditionally, what has been most appreciated in his pictorial production are his landscape drawings. However, he produced other types of works, including three volumes of erotic art or Shunga made up of numerous images on that theme, treated with extraordinary imagination and also with exquisite realism when portraying the human body and the different sexual practices. This set of works includes this one from Dream of the Fisherman's Wife.

Although the talent of Hokusai was already known in Europe in the 19th century, the truth is that only a few scholars and artists knew of the existence of this series oferotic prints. And it is necessary to take into account the high level of censorship that existed in those years in the Old Continent, while oriental artists, and in this specific case in Japan, had greater freedom and less complexes to deal with certain topics. On the other hand, in European lands, the most traditional society was very modest in sexual matters, at least publicly. Even more so when dealing with images that explicitly deal with taboo subjects and considered highly obscene, such as oral sex practices or even the representation of pubic hair on the female body. Something very strange in European painting, except for honorable exceptions from that same 19th century, as is the case of the extraordinary work The Origin of the World by the realist painter Gustave Courbet.

But the scene that Hokusai presents us goes much further. Not only is there oral sex and pubic hair, it even represents a practice of bestiality. We see a woman lying down, who is supposedly the wife of a fisherman as well as a diver. That follows because she actually introduces her to us at the bottom of the sea, and there she is having sex with two octopuses

The scene is most clear and at the same time most disturbing. We see the expression of the young woman with a gesture of total ecstasy of pleasure, something that is still reinforced by the crests of the waves that would come to symbolize her orgasm. But at the same time, everything has a sinister tone. In fact, she has to risk her own life to achieve such a pleasurable delusion. The long pink tentacles of her octopuses are not only touching her erogenous zones, they are also holding and immobilizing her at the same time. She has no escape

Even while the larger octopus is kissing her vagina, her other smaller octopus is kissing her lips at the sametime its tentacles hug her neck and suffocate her at the precise moment she reaches orgasm.
