On the contrary, in Van Gogh's biography we do not appreciate that character of a very high self-esteem or personal pride. In reality, he was a truly tormented person, and the reasons for such a profusion of self-portraits are to be found in his extremely poor economic situation that prevented him from hiring models to pose for his paintings, so he chose himself to paint his canvases

Van Gogh is not dedicated to pasting dots of color to make them come together in the eye and compose other tones. Actually, what he does is juxtapose and superimpose brushstrokes in different tones. While on the other hand his treatment of light brings him closer to the works of theImpressionist painters. In other words, as can be seen throughout his pictorial production, also in his self-portraits Van Gogh shows us as an unclassifiable painter with a unique personal style, who is capable of drink from many sources to transform them into their own forms, which at the same time opened paths to other later artists.

But apart from stylistically, you also have to see the work as an image or passage from his own personal biography. Here he is shown to us as a person with some hope, since the canvas was painted in the summer of 1887 inParis. When he was already tired of the atmosphere of the capital of France, its light and its way of life, and had already made the decision to leave the city to go south, in search of other shades, other lights and hopefully a little luck with your art. The destination he had chosen was the city ofArles, in theProvence, in theNoon (Midi) of France.
