This work by Edouard Manet is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and can sometimes also be found with the title Lady in Black.

It is a work that the painter made in 1872, and for it he used as a model the painter Berthé Morisot, of whom he also made another portrait that same year, but it is a work with much more color and contrast than in this one, since much of the mass of black that dominates this painting is eliminated there.

During the Impressionism this type of game between painters was common, in which one painted and others posed in different attitudes. Examples are abundant, in fact Manet himself has left us several works in which other artists of his time appear portrayed. But in this case he choseMorisot, one of the few female painters who achieved a certain renown thanks to works such as The Cradle or Young Woman Sitting on the Sofa

The work shows us the immense attachment that Manet had towards the Spanish, especially to his art, since in many he paid tribute to artists such as Francisco de Goya, in his work The balcony, or the customs as in his portrait of Lola de Valencia or in the painting Dead Bullfighter.

On the other hand this is a work in which he again shows that he is in contact with theyoung impressionist painters, andhe lets himself be influenced by them, but nevertheless he has his own style, and in fact he was never totally linked to Impressionism. Not only because he was older than them, but because his way of painting was different. Among other things for its abundant use of black tones.

He uses colors that are like bituminous and with them he creates special atmospheres. He does, however, generate them with very loose brushstrokes, which is a very typical trait of impressionist art. And the influence of Japanese prints is also very much from his time, something that is more than evident here by the different fans of oriental airs.

Something that fits perfectly not only with his way of capturing landscape views, whether natural or urban, but also when making portraits like this one. Since Manet carried out this type of work by having the models pose before him from life, and from there, with hardly any subsequent retouching, the finished work came out.

It is curious because the portrait genre is not very Impressionist, however Manet worked extensively on it, not only painting other artists of the same discipline such as Morisot or Claude Monet, or portraying himself, but also other characters such as the writer Emile Zola, or Mallarmé or the dancer herself Lola de Valencia.
