This work was made by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Carpeaux between 1865 and 1869. It was originally placed as part of the decoration of the facade of the Opera Garnier in Paris, although it was removed from its original location a century or so later due to its poor state of conservation due to pollution. So an exact replica was placed in its place, while the work was restored and can now be seen in the Musée d'Orsay in the French capital.

The work is typical of the production ofCarpeaux, who was a highly valued decorative artist in his time. Although his mastery made him capable of making much more serious works, such as his magnificent group of Count Ugolino.

However, as we say, what was most appreciated about him were his ornamental values, which he knew how to blend perfectly with the official tone, which is why this type of sculpture is not unusual in the Opera or other public buildings, such as the Louvre Palace.

On the other hand, we must bear in mind that this type of sculpture work was very common at this time, which are not reliefs, but groups that are attached to monuments, something that can also be seen, for example, in the Arc de Triomphe of the Parisian Champs Elysées.

As for The Dance itself. We can see thatIt is a sculpture where, surprisingly, movement and liveliness prevail in the figures. A type of representation that the artist himself captured in other works of his, such as in his Three Graces or in the decoration of Flora del Trocadero.

As a curiosity, it can be said that when the architect Charles Garnier commissioned four sculptors as many sculptural groups for the facade of his building, the commission was that each of them represent one of the arts linked to opera and that he do it with four figures to be placed on the sides of the two doors.

However, Carpeaux decided to make a group of six nude women dancing around the figure of a genius playing a simple percussion instrument, a tambourine. And not only did it break the initial rules of the commission, but when seen for the first time the representation of nude young women was considered inappropriate to adorn a building of this style.

Until it was requested that they be removed and the work suffered some other aggression. However, the sculptor was fully satisfied with his work, since for three years he had made numerous sketches and models, always with the aim of being able to recreate movement, and to do so taking into account the viewer's point of view, in a way that his sculptures give the sensation of dance and movement, both horizontally and vertically. And without a doubt, he did.
