This temple is located in the town of La Orotava on the Canary Island of Tenerife, and the reason for its appearance here is because it is a very curious case of Baroque architecturea mixed with notes of Neoclassicism, as well as American influence.

In fact, the very origins of the church tell us about the history of the Canary Islands, since it was a temple that originated in the year 1498, coinciding with the moment of the final conquest of the island of Tenerife by Spain. Since the Canarian archipelago originally did not stop being a colony of the Spanish Crown.

In this way, and as was the case in American lands, as soon as power was established over the territory, one of the largest buildings that were built was the church, to also capture the power of the new religion. However, nothing has survived from that original temple to this day.

In 1706, a volcanic eruption left it severely damaged, and the church eventually had to be rebuilt several decades later. Specifically from 1767, under the direction of the master builder Patricio García, and the distant supervision and plans of the great architect of the time: Ventura Rodríguez. A key character to understand Spanish architecturefrom the 18th century, as he participated in such emblematic works as the Royal Palace in Madrid or the Basilica del Pilar in Zaragoza.

Going back to the Church of the Conception of La Orotava let's say that it is a complex temple for various reasons. In the first place because of its duality of styles.

Clearly the façade is in the baroque style. In it, its curved lines stand out both in the alignment and in the upper finishes. In addition, the dynamism that its different openings give it and also its different colors in the stonework is very striking. In short, it is a very lively facade in which you can also see two details that give it its own personality.

On the one hand, two spheres or globes can be seen among the decoration that come to represent the Canary Islands on one side and Cuba on the other. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the Spanish Crown, the we althiest people on the islands also participated in the reconstruction, many of whom had made their fortunes on the American continent. Hence this twinning.

And another interesting note on the façade is the presence of the balcony over the door, something very typical of traditional Canarian architecture.

As for the interior, we discover a neoclassical temple, with three naves separated by curious columns that mix the Ionic base with the Corinthian capitals. Of course, each capital is different in its decoration. And thereplant motifs related to the Antilles are not lacking either.

That is to say, in this work from the Canary Islands, as well as in other distant works of Hispano-American Baroque art, different influences merge. And it is that we reiterate that the Canary Islands, today are fully Spanish territory, but at the time they were simple colonies.
