The artists Miguel and Juan González made up to 24 paintings in the last years of the 17th century that depicted different historical episodes that occurred during the conquest of Mexico. This was a commission of considerable scope and the result can be seen today at the Museo de América in Madrid, Spain, although it is true that it was not the Spaniards themselves who commissioned the work, rather, it was a request commissioned by the Mexican authorities.

Conquest of Mexico

These local rulers the truth is that on the one hand they recognized themselves as part of the country's ancient pre-Columbian cultures, but at the same time they considered themselves heirs of the conquerors from Spain. Conquistadors headed by Hernán Cortés, who landed on the Mexican coast in April 1519, and despite the fact that he had subordinated himself to the Hispanic authorities and did not have many troops, he was able to quickly put an end to theAztec Empire, since August 1521 had already taken its capital, Tenochtitlán and had captured the last emperor of that Mexica civilization: Cuauhtemoc.

But since then, the local government had gradually been taken over by a Creole elite, originating from the we althy Mexican families of yesteryear, whichthey had maintained a relationship of interest and mutual benefits with the Spaniards. And it was these people who commissioned this series of paintings that represent the conquest of Mexican territory, and that therefore reflect the particular vision of those episodes that this privileged social class had. An image that on many occasions is quite condescending with the cruelty of certain episodes. And above all, she is very respectful of the rulers of that period, without paying excessive attention to the common Mexica people.

But beyond the interpretations about the history, the truth is that this set of works are very interesting as graphic documents, since there is really an important documentation work, when it comes to presenting the outfits, the weapons or certain customs of the pre-Columbian peoples, and that many years had passed between the events narrated and the date of realization of these works.
