Within all the historical stages of humanity there are great wonders. Works worth mentioning for their dimensions, their aesthetics or their constructive daring. But surely few are as enigmatic and surprising as the great examples of megalithic art that have survived to this day. And as an example, just look at the so-called Dólmenes de Antequera, in the Spanish province of Málaga.

Viera Dolmen

The complex is called Antequera Dolmens and groups three megalithic monuments. Two dolmens proper, those of Menga and Viera, and there is also the Tholos del Romeral. All of them were built with large stones (hence the megalithic) and are dated to the Neolithic Period and the Bronze Age, approximately 6,500 years ago.

With those large stones that we have already mentioned, large chambers and spaces covered with lintels were formed, and also in the case of the tholos, creating a false dome. And once these spaces were created, which would have a ritual use, they were completely covered by earth, creating burial mounds that make them go completely unnoticed on the ground except in the area where an access door opens.

The ritual use that we have commented on would mainly have a funerary character, although it is notrules out that there were also ceremonial acts linked to fertility, especially related to the land and crops, since we are talking about a period of Prehistory in which men were already farmers and ranchers.

What is clear is that people did not live in these places. In fact, different Neolithic settlements have been found throughout the mountains of this area of Malaga in which it is proven by archaeological remains that small populations lived. Given the size of these groups, it is speculated that they all joined together in a kind of clan and as such all of them participated in the construction of these great ritual spaces, since it seems impossible that places like these Dolmens of Antequera were the work of a small population. And even increasing the number of people who would participate in its construction, they are still admirable works and with many unknowns still to be resolved.

What is certain is that the set of Dolmens of Antequera is one of the greatest examples preserved in all of Europe of what would be megalithic architecture.
