Many before visual poems were invented, well into the 20th century with such avant-garde authors as the Italian Marinetti and his futuristic compositions. Long before that, in the 9th century there was a character who was somewhat ahead of that aesthetic, obviously saving the thematic distances and creative pretensions.

We are talking about Hrabaus Maurus (776 – 856) a German artist who we can consider at the same time a writer, a philosopher and a theologian. And not only that, but for many he is the first teacher in Germany since he created an active cultural center in the city of Fulda, a place where both religious and secular education were attended to.

And that Hrabanus Maurus was a monk belonging to the Benedictine order and educated in the Abbey of Fulda. And although he had periods that he lived outside of that place, the truth is that he spent practically his entire life there, where he became abbot. Although he had to resign from that position to later become theArchbishop of Mainz

However, even though he held all these positions, he devoted his entire life to writing and commenting on the different biblical texts. For that and for his encyclopedic books he achieved fame. But he also did it because of the many calligrams or visual poems that he composed, some with images and others simplycomposed of letters, like the ones we show you here.

Those calligrams are generated from puns and with them he generates crosses, stars and various symbols. And of course when you insert images they are representations of Jesus and other biblical characters.

We can consider these compositions true visual and verbal experiments. Somehow related to the artistic calligraphy of other cultures, especially with Arabic script and even with what is done in Japan.

Even so, there is no doubt that at first it may seem inappropriate for these times of the Middle Ages. But really it is. And as for its meaning, the truth is that it is not always easy to discern. However, it is highly appreciated that innovative spirit in a highly personal creator, and practically unknown, even in Germany
