Inside the Manta Castle near the population of Saluzzo in the region of Piedmont, north of Italy, houses a set of 15th-century wall paintings of extraordinary value. It is located in what is known as the Baron's Room and is called the Cycle of the Brave and the Heroines. A creation of an anonymous master who has become known as Master of the Manta Castle and that we cannot date exactly, although many place it in approximately the year 1420. At one time where the art of the Renaissance is emerging, while here we find some paintings that we should describe as Gothic art, and more specifically the one known as International Gothicor “courteous gothic”.

In these paintings we can see a parade of richly dressed men and women, from what it is deduced that they would be the aristocrats of the time. All of them located in an environment reminiscent of a garden, whose trees are used to hang the heraldic shields of the characters represented. And on the ground a meadow is discovered in which the botanical species are painted in scrupulous detail, as if it were a book of herbalists. A type of botanical books quite common in those years.

While on the wall in front ofIn the same room, the mural is completed with another scene that has been called the Fountain of Youth. There you see a group of older people running towards the fountain. And it certainly has a more popular and even grotesque tone than the parade of nobles.

When contemplating the work, without a doubt, you can breathe an atmosphere of a fairy tale. The rhythm is most graceful, the postures elegant, the dresses refined, the gestures full of delicacy. Undoubtedly the most expression of the courts of the time (hence, the name "courtly gothic").

On the other hand, as we have said, it is a time when Italian society is undergoing changes with the arrival of the Renaissance ideals and Humanism. Hence, there is a certain melancholic tone, as if remembering that chivalric world that little by little is falling behind. We see men who are models of gentlemen and women who are authentic virtuous ladies. It is a description of an idyllic world for the we althier classes of the late Middle Ages. And of course the forms of gothic art are the ideal ones to represent that idea, despite the fact that the impulse of the Renaissance was already unstoppable.
