Despite what it may seem just by reading his name,Armandowas not of Latino descent. It was actually the pseudonym of a Dutch painter, whose real name was Herman Dirk Van Dodeweerd.
This artist born in 1929 in Amsterdam, and who recently died in 2018 in the German city of Potsdam, is one of the artists of the Netherlands most sought after and also most interesting in recent decades.
A visual creator highly influenced by some of the most prominent abstract currents of the second half of the 20th century, especially those of a more expressionist nature. In fact, among the different influences that shaped his very personal style are artists such as the FrenchmanJean Dubuffet, author of his famousTextures. And we must also mention other influences such as Jean Foutrier or the members of the CoBrA Group, representatives of post-war art in Europe. In addition to the fact that Armando was the founder of the Group of Dutch Informalists.
Although in reality the greatest influence on Armando's art was his own biography and especially the years of the Second World War in which he lived in the town ofAmersfort being a teenager.
During World War II the Netherlands, like many other placesof the European continent were occupied by the Nazi army of Adolf Hitler. And during that time, the Germans decided to turn Netherlands into a transition camp where they would gather many people who would later be deported to concentration camps. In this way, the young man saw with his own eyes all the cruelty of the Nazis and that was something that influenced his vision of the world and his art throughout his life. An oppressive atmosphere that is certainly clear in works like this one that we show you. Because even without knowing anything about his biography, without a doubt the image, in its total simplicity of forms based on very thick fillings and colors as simple as black and white, has an expressive force that transmits repression to us.
However, it must be said that Armando was not only a highly valued painter. He is a total artist who has also bequeathed us many sculptures, just as he was a poet. In addition to making his first steps as an actor, violinist, journalist or audiovisual and film director. In short, a very complete artist, and the truth is that at times he is also very complex.
