The work of the Basque artistAgustín Ibarrola(1930 –) is always very attached to the land where he makes his particular creations that blend sculpture, painting and landscaping. But without a doubt what is considered his greatest creation is this intervention in the Asturian port of the city ofLlanes, where he worked between 2001 and 2002.

Ibarrola's Memory Cubes

A very hard job, given the advanced age of the artist at that time, who for months worked between the concrete blocks that make up the port breakwater. Although it is true that he had the participation of a small group of collaborators, in order to paint about 120 of those enormous blocks that weigh between 30 and 60 tons.

For this he used a paint identical to that used on oil platforms, so that it can resist the waves of the sea and the passage of time. The objective was to recreate a very colorful universe to recount in a very free way the memory of the town of Llanes and its surroundings, but also to capture in some way his own memory as an artist.

Play with colors, with painted shapes, with the edges and positions of the blocks, with the different perspectives and even with changes in the atmosphere and the sea, to create a place whose visit invites contemplation, seeking harmony and the infinity of symbols represented in the cubes.

Some symbols that weThey talk about the history of this territory of Asturias and its nature, as well as the traditions of the place.

The result is undoubtedly very visual, and very jovial, at times almost naive. With multiple viewings, since it is a work that changes depending on where it is viewed from and also when it is done. Without forgetting the games that it poses between recognizable and figurative forms, with others of a symbolic, geometric and abstract nature.
