Cerny's Metalmorphosis

Its appearance and dynamism has a lot to do with the place where it is located, since it stands in the Technological Park of this city in the state of North Carolina.

It is a sculpture made of stainless steel and of a considerable size, since it exceeds 9 meters in height and weighs 14 tons. So far its dimensions, but its great value is that it is a mobile sculpture. It is the development in height of several layers of stainless steel that rotate horizontally 360 degrees, with seven different turns between them.

In this way the aspect is changing, and only every few turns, all those layers make up the head of a silver giant, from whose mouth the water of a fountain emerges, since the base of the sculpture is a wide raft trowel of water, which collaborates even more in the game of brightness and reflections that the work has.

Its title alludes to the qualities of the monument, since it is made of metal and its presentation varies. In the first place because of the mirror effect of the stainless steel thatallows to reflect the surrounding buildings, sunlight or night lighting. And secondly because of the turns that move the piece. Some changes that are the result of both mechanical engineering and computer programming, since the turns of the steel plates are controllable over the internet.

Metalmorphosis in its changing aspect

In short, due to its polished shine, the lighting provided by its reflections, the presence of water and its movement, it is a creation that symbolizes modernity and contemporaneity. In addition to the fact that this material is very expensive, but it guarantees a long life due to its resistance to weather conditions.

However, there is another interesting curiosity regarding this figure. Later on, it is when he made another similar one in Prague, but this time its size is still larger and in addition the rotating movement is also multiplied by a greater number of steel plates. That is to say, one could say that the sculpture of Charlotte was almost a magnificent rehearsal of this other work in its country, which is also a head representing Franz Kafka, the Czech author of the famous novel The Metamorphosis.
