Today this painting occupies a prominent place in the room where the spokespersons of the different parliamentary groups present at the Congress of Deputies of Spain meet. And it is that the canvas is inspired by the life of one of the characters that best exemplifies how the freedoms of the people can be defended by a humble character. Although it is true that Mariana Pineda, the woman who evokes the fabric of Congress, was persecuted for it, arrested and finally publicly executed.

A story that takes us back to the beginning of the 19th century. That was the time in which this woman from Granada lived, although she did so for only a few years. It was a short time, since Mariana Pineda was born in 1804 and at only 26 years old she was sentenced to death by garrote in a public square. A short life, but really intense.

she As a child she was orphaned and went to live with an uncle. But at the age of 15 she was already married, and she soon became her mother, although she also quickly became a widow. She would later have a second girl from another relationship. The fact is that during all that time she was steeped in liberal ideals, and that in the end was her downfall.

Her arrest occurred in 1831, and although she had a previous record, her crime was that she had woven a flag with the legend: Law, Liberty and Equality. Some very liberal proclamations andin total conflict with the absolutist ideals represented by the absolutist government of King Ferdinand VII.

With that arrest, the authorities wanted her to rat out other liberal activists, which she never did, and for that reason she was sentenced to death. But before the sentence was carried out, she was transferred to the Granada convent of the nuns of Santa María Egipciaca. And it is precisely there where the scene we see in this painting is set.

The work is obviously an invention, since the Sevillian painter Juan Antonio Vera Calvo (1825 – 1905) painted it long after those events, in 1862, and of course was not present at the time. But the painter applied all his costumbrista style and his pictorial mastery to capture an image with all the solemnity and popularity that has later been given to this heroine of the freedoms to whom they have dedicated numerous paintings, songs, poems, films and even Federico García Lorca himself, made her the key character in one of his plays starring women. A work that could not have any other title than Mariana Pineda.
