It is clear that today contemporary architecture is developing its great projects in buildings that are very different from the more traditional ones such as cathedrals or palaces. In the 21st century, many of the great architectural works are airports, banks or sports stadiums. As an example, it is enough to remember one of the latest jewels of current architecture: the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium in Beijing.

Well, one of the most prestigious architects of recent decades, the BritishNorman Foster, has carried out projects in all these types of constructions since the first great masterpiece of him: the Shanghai Bank of Hong Kong. So it seemed that this artist who even has the title of "sir" was the most opportune to lead the refurbishment of one of the great temples of British culture. We are referring to the Wembley Stadium in London, whose first version was already an icon of English heritage and sport in general, but it was evident that it had become old given its facilities inaugurated for the World Cup 1966 World Cup.

Wembley is the stadium where the football and rugby teams always play their home games. It is also the great stage for great concerts or events of the highest level. For this reason, it was necessary to modernize it, even more so considering that in 2012 it was going tohold an Olympic Games in London.

So the project was entrusted to Foster & Partners, who had already carried out other works in the British capital, such as the famous Millennium Bridge over the riverThames. And the team of architects chose to destroy the famous towers of Old Wembley, but had to incorporate another charismatic element. And that was the great arc, something that is not only visual, but it is structure. In this gigantic arch of 7 meters in diameter, 133 high and more than 300 long, a large part of the stadium's roof is supported.

A retractable roof to cover the 90,000 seats and the playing field if necessary. In addition, that capacity may vary, taking into account that the surface can be transformed to host other sports.

In short, New Wembley is an iconic work, of spectacular dimensions, for example the circumference of the entire enclosure extends for a kilometer if we put it in a straight line. It is also a beautiful work that acquires even more prominence at night, when its gigantic arch lights up, becoming visible from much of the city. A benchmark in the architecture of sports stadiums. Of course, its cost was immense, although the truth is that we are talking about one of the most revered football fields in the world. A place that welcomes visitors on match days and non-match days.
