Robert Indiana Love

The truth is that Robert Indiana, whose real name is Robert Clark, has performed this combination numerous times. It is a type of work that has been demanded of him in many places, until finally it has led him to boredom. Although he has brought him fame and money, it is undeniable that he has overshadowed the rest of his artistic career. Which on the other hand has never reached the point of genius that he had with his sculpture of L O VE, whose original from 1970 is in theIndianapolis Museum of Art, the city and his home state

Curiously, the origin of that work must be searched for several years before and in another format. It was the MoMA in New York whoasked Indiana to come up with a Christmas card for the museum. And that's when he designed this typographic game. In fact, this link between Christmas and the work is not accidental. Because despite what you might think, the message has more to do with religion than with any romantic idyll.

Just as he was commissioned byMoMA, Robert Indiana was working on transforming a church into a space for contemporary art. And he has told on several occasions that this was fundamental in the conception of his idea.Indiana, as a child, he had belonged with his family to the Christian Science church community, to whose creed that temple located in Ridgefield also belonged. And there, on the walls, the word Love was painted on numerous occasions, and above all the expression God is Love. That's where the inspiration came from.

What he didn't imagine was the popularity that his work would achieve. A creation distributed throughout various cities around the world and that has been seen in many photographs, television programs or that has been reproduced on stamps and postcards. Without forgetting that it has been the object of numerous plagiarisms. An incredible success, which Indiana confessed that he first overwhelmed and eventually tired him. That is why the last years of his life (1928 – 2018) he decided to get away from fame and take refuge on an island in the state ofMaine.
