On the walls of this cave in Andalusia, south of Spain, some relevant cave paintings from theperiod were found Paleolithic, and with many similarities to the paintings traditionally considered to belong to the Cantabrian Sea and France. For this reason, the cave paintings of the Cueva de la Pileta are an invaluable jewel of Prehistory, which since they were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century have been studied by the most eminent researchers of this period of humanity.
There are both paintings and engravings and different animals are easily identifiable. There are deer, goats, horses and bulls, but also fish, a bison or a seal. In addition to other elements of an abstract nature. The truth is that Cueva de la Pileta, located in the Malaga municipality of Benaoján must have been occupied for a very long period of time, since the site also shows traces of schematic painting from the Eneolithic, as well as traces of ceramics from the Neolithic phase, approximately from the 4th millennium BC. And the findings did not end here, bone remains were also found, some related to a group of pygmies, flint tools and other ancient materials.
However, the most interesting are the parietal paintings. Which can be differentiated into three types. The yellow, red and black paints. Almost all of them located in the Main Gallery.
The oldest are the yellow ones, and their graphic forms can be related to the Aurignacian era. They are zoomorphic paintings, but also ornamental in nature, with no idea of figuration. They are the so-called serpentine paintings made with a finger stained with pigment that makes undulations.
Cueva de la Pileta detail
Also in the case of red paintings, a distinction is made between animal forms and symbols. Among the animals there is a bison, a species that would not be too abundant in this region. And as for the signs, they are symbols of indecipherable meaning for us. Although there are some oval-shaped paintings, which have sometimes been interpreted as representing mollusks or turtles. Although it has also been wanted to see fences in them to confine animals. However, it is not at all clear.
And finally there are the black paintings, the most modern, but curiously the most archaic in terms of style. Although there are very interesting figures such as a goat or a pregnant mare. Without forgetting a huge fish, about 90 centimeters, whose representation is not common in this type of rock art. And the truth is that in La Pileta, not only is said figure, there are five other painted fish, albeit smaller.
