Some time ago we told you about the pictorial work done by the American painterWinslow Homeras a result of the journalistic work he had done for various magazines. Out of those trips and chronicles came works such as A Rainy Day at the Camp. However, over the years, the artist became distant from all those trips and commissions, so much so that he ended up retired in a small town on the coast ofNew England.

Winslow Homer's Midsummer Night

Specifically it was set to Prout’s Neck, to Maine. There he had his study that directly overlooked the sea. From that place he dedicated himself to painting the coastline and also the daily life of the sailors, fishermen and people of those towns. A good example of this is this canvas en titled Summer Night, painted in 1890 and currently part of the collection of Orsay Museum in Paris.

It is a most elegant and sensitive work. Something as simple as seeing a couple of girls dancing on the rock is capable of transferring endless marine sensations. And not just visuals. Especially audible. The dance refers us to the sound, to the music, and being next to the sea, without a doubt we hear the constant swaying of the waves. And from there the rest of sensations arrive, the cool of the summer night and the breeze, the aroma of s altpeter, etc, … It even has thathypnotic power possessed by the waves of the sea. In short, all those sensations that the viewer knows are evoked.

The frame has that quality, and also a huge technical mastery. Three plans are drawn. The first with the two women dancing. Then the group of people against the light, and in the background the immense sea that is in a kind of dead calm.

The lighting study is more than remarkable, with a light that evokes the moon and that is supposed to be on one side of the canvas, at a point outside the image. That conditions all the lights and shadows of the painting, which increase that dynamism provided by the dancing of the girls and the waves.

Without a doubt it is a masterpiece, and for many the first to be done by Homer after several decades of pictorial career. And some even consider it one of the first masterpieces of American art. And the truth is that it is not for less, since today it is a painting worthy of sharing the Parisian museum with other contemporary geniuses of the stature of Monet, Renoir or Degas.
