Anyone expects to see a set of art deco in big cities in Europe or America, where there are wonderful examples like in Miami, in the FloridaAmerican. However, it is surprising to discover that there are other sets of enormous value in places as remote and sometimes as unknown as the city of Innisfail, north of Queensland in Australia.

Yes, in this city there are more than twenty historic buildings that constitute the great set of art deco architecture of the entire Australian territory. A set that accumulates in the center of the town, along Edith and Rankin streets, and in which there are private and municipal buildings and even the historic Catholic temple.

The truth is that Innisfail is located in one of the wettest areas of the entire country, and also where more hurricanes and tropical cyclones are suffered. And precisely as a result of them came this set of art deco. As a result of one of those tropical phenomena, the city was almost completely devastated in 1918. The only thing that stood was a couple of buildings that had been built with concrete, which was where a large part of the population took refuge.

After that disaster, the city had to be rebuilt, and it was decided to modernize it and adapt it to tasteinternational of the moment the Art Deco style. In addition, we must take into account the immigrant nature of Australia, and in a place like Innisfail there were people from many parts of the planet. So art deco was ideal to capture such a cosmopolitan character. So that elements reminiscent of French, Spanish, Italian, Moroccan architecture, etc… were incorporated into the facades of these buildings. That variety of shapes and the strong color of the constructions are the distinctive notes.

And even more since the last few years. Obviously, Innisfail has continued to withstand storms, some very strong, and although the buildings are more resistant, they also take damage. That is why after the last tropical cyclones that occurred in the 21st century, the city has decided to restore and recover all that incredible architectural heritage, putting in value all that special artistic ensemble, in which there are authentic jewels of the time, and especially the most emblematic building in the city, the Johnstone Shire Hall.
